Light Up a Life (Christmas 2011)

In December Colwall Rotary Club hosted two ‘Light Up a Life’ Christmas trees – one outside the Colwall Coffee Lounge, the other above the Brewers Arms in West Malvern. This year we were blessed with fair weather, the tree light dedication services were extremely well attended and the money raised for St Michael’s Hospice surpassed all expectations. Gift Aid has still to be added in to the total, but so far the income raised for the Hospice has reached £1342.

Nicky West, the Hospice’s Chief Executive said: “This is an amazing total. The money raised will make a significant difference to patients and carers at the hospice”.

None of this would be possible without the wonderful support of the two venues, local businesses and individuals. Thank you so much to everybody who contributed so generously to Light Up a Life through their time, efforts and donations.

Scatter Week

This is the week our members deny themselves the comforts of the Malvern Hills Hotel and travel to meet with other Rotary Clubs and participate in their club activity.

This fulfils one of Rotary's objectives; The development of aquaintance as an opportunity for Service.

We do not know who we will meet, or what they do or who they know, but someone at that meeting may be able to help us in one of our local activities at some time in the future.

Locations already identified for visits are Ross-on-Wye, Worcester and Southam (in Warwickshire).

This proved to be a dry window in the weather.

Over 470 people attended the event and contributed to the fund raising success - our final total is £18,500+ profit. This will be distributed between The Emily Jordan Foundation, Robocap (a charity raising money for new treatment methods of Prostate Cancer) and Water Survival Boxes (a charity founded by the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge).

Colwall Rotary visit Berlin

A group of 9 members of Colwall Rotary Club paid a visit to Berlin last weekend.

One of the objects of Rotary is to Promote International Understanding & Goodwill through visits, exchanges and other means.

During this visit we met with a local club - The Rotary Club of Berlin Unter den Linden, where we were made extrememly welcome; to such an extent that they held the meeting totaly in English! I think that we would struggle to return the compliment.

Featuring amongst other acivities a cycle ride through the city centre on Sunday morning and a visit the to DDR Museum all the group achieved a greater understanding of what the city has been through. The general feeling was that this was a place to go back to.

Tags: International,overseas trip,fellowship

Category: International

Back in time on the Severn Valley Railway

People think that Rotarians are "old people" so what better than to show it by going back in time !

The Severn Valley Railway regularly hosts 1940s weekends and this year members of Colwall Rotary Club attended, and did so in style by wearing period costume. As the planned train journey from Malvern to Kidderminster was replaced by a Bus Service due to engineering works, we gave a lot of people something to smile about.

This event gets a high profile in Kidderminster and the venue was packed. Our train left at noon and part of the ride was taken up with Sunday Lunch. Afterwards the train progressed up the line past various stations, all of which were themed for the weekend. The was much live music at many stations and the quality of the music was top class.

Many thanks to Rotarian Nick Paul for organising this enjoyable day out.

Tags: fellowship

Category: General News

Colwall Rotary Mayhem Riders Tony Brook, Russell Horton, John Remmington,David and Katie Watson battled through wind, rain and mud to finish in the top 84% of teams in the 24hr Mountain Mayhem at the weekend - "pretty good for old folks in their first competition" as Russell said.

Over 1850 solo riders and teams took part in the world's biggest mountain bike festival in the scenic splendour of Eastnor deer park.
The professional teams were aiming to complete up to 30 circuits of the 10 mile course through woods, twists and turns,up steep hills and down technically challenging steps and jumps.
